VLC is one of the most popular and widely used Video players. However, it does not come with Ubuntu by default. You have to install the VLC media player manually to use it in Ubuntu Linux such as Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 17.04. VLC media player is also available for other Linux platform, you have to choose it as per your need. However, this tutorial is focused on Ubuntu Linux.

You can install VLC in Ubuntu using either GUI or using command line interface.
1.Installing VLC In Ubuntu Using GUI
To install VLC on a Ubuntu system such as Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 17.04 using GUI, you can use the Synaptic Package Manager.
Note: If the Synaptic Package Manager is not installed by default, use sudo apt install synaptic command to install it before to use.
Just open the Synaptic Manager tool and type vlc in the search box as shown in the following figure.
From the search result, select browser-plugin-vlc and click Appy to install it.
2.Installing VLC In Ubuntu Using Command Line
If you love to use CLI interface, use the below mentioned commands to install VLC in Ubuntu.
sudo apt update –y sudo apt dist-upgrade –y sudo reboot sudo apt install vlc browser-plugin-vlc –y
Once the installation is done, you can use it to play your favorite videos in Ubuntu system. The following figure shows the VLC for Ubuntu Linux.
